Sunday April 5th, 2009 was an exciting day for Graceway! (www.gracewaync.org) Lisa Shearin shared her story with us, and her journey with God throughout the last few years being blind. It was a powerful and moving day for everyone - and we highly suggest if you’ve not heard her testimony to please listen to this podcast.
The following are the two poems that Lisa wrote and shares during this talk:
“His Path, My Path”
Oh Lord, my God…
Strange is this path on which I trod.
The way is rocky, narrow and steep…
Dear Jesus steady my wavering feet.
At times I feel I’m traveling in err…
You gently remind me that you are there.
Where am I headed I wonder aloud…
It seems to be a place far from the crowd.
No other travelers do I see…
Lord, is this pathway just for me?
Oft times I feel I can’t carry on…
You gently remind me, this is the only way home.
Home, ah, now that’s the place…
Where at last I’ll see my Saviors face!
What’s that Lord, I hear you say…
Stay the course from day to day.
I’ll give it my best, I promise you…
I know with Jesus I’ll make it through.
When I stumble and reject your plan…
I know to expect your loving hand.
Your hands to comfort, my heart to still…
And to ultimately break my stubborn will.
So, I guess the best thing for me to do…
Is not to make great promises to you.
Instead I’ll give you each and every day…
And seek your guidance all along the way.
I know you’ll draw me to your side…
There I wish to humbly abide.
I thank you Lord for your saving grace…
I give my heart for your dwelling place.

I see that you are handicapped…
I see that you are handicapped…
I bet you’re wondering what I mean by that.
You have all your fingers and all your toes…
The five senses, you have all of those.
I on the other hand cannot see…
And yes, I know, you feel sorry for me.
But save your sorrow for another day…
My heavenly Father made me this way.
He chose me to spread His Holy word…
Because of my blindness, so many have heard.
Now let’s get back to your handicap…
It’s your vision, I’m sure of that.
You see with eyes everyone you meet…
You look them over from head to feet.
But you could see so much more…
If their outer garments you could ignore.
I’m not influenced by their skin, clothes or hair…
Do their shoes match their purse, I just don’t care.
Tattoos and tongue rings you can’t help but see…
Sometimes it’s good to be blind, like me!
Their home, his car, her jewelry box…
Surely, they don’t wear black shoes with white socks.
You judge at first, by what you see…
I am blessed because that never happens with me.
I see others with my heart, it’s true…
I judge them by what they say and do.
I challenge you, my sighted friends…
To let go your handicap, begin again.
Turn a blind eye to skin, clothes, and hair…
And your life will be blessed beyond compare.
